Benriner Japanese Mandoline Slicer Review

Benriner Japanese Mandoline SlicerThis is an excellent slicer.I've used everything in it from carrots (when making my carrot version of thai papaya salad) julienned into matchstick thickness to wide thin slices of Korean radish.Never failed me.

Two drawbacks though:

1.The safety guard is a joke.It doesn't hold the veggies very well and is a pain to use effectively...which means I usually don't use it.I've cut my fingers on this mandolin twice now, which isn't bad for two years of regular useage, but I don't like the sight of blood so I'll leave it as a major detractor.Luckily for me, I cut myself on the julienne part and not the actual wide slicer. In other words, my finger meat was left shredded but intact.Whew!

2.The metal parts rust.Yep.They rust.Hence the reason I am now shopping around for another slicer.Don't know yet if I'll get another Benriner.Might look into the Bohn.

***Update***
Apparently Benriner realized the metal parts rusted because their mandolins now come with plastic screws to hold the julienne blades in place and to adjust the thickness level.

Chef'sChoice Non-Serrated Blade for Model 610 Food Slicer Review

Chef'sChoice Non-Serrated Blade for Model 610 Food SlicerThis blade is a must have if you plan on slicing meat with the Chefs Choice 610. The slicer only includes a serrated blade which is great for bread and veggies but not the best for thin slices of meat. With this blade I am able to use the thinnest setting on the slicer to produce thin, even, deli quality style cuts.

Chef's Choice 662 International Professional Electric Food Slicer with 8.6-Inch Diameter Blade Review

Chef's Choice 662 International Professional Electric Food Slicer with 8.6 inch Diameter BladeI first ordered ( November 2003) a model 645 Veri-tilt unit but was disapointed because the "travel" on the slicer was not adaquate to slice my much loved prosciutto. The blade was only 7 inches and was serrated. It also lacked a blade cover so I was sure it would "drag" when slicing. (At $20.00 a pound for good prosciutto I didn't even try!)

In December 2003, I bought the The larger model 662 with the 8.6 inch smooth blade was a far better choice! It had a covered blade that only exposes the cutting edge of the blade to the meat surface. This is also a much safer configuration then the "exposed" blades found on the less expensive models.

The unit is solidly built and appears to be of a very high quality. The travel on the slicing cariage is long enough to cut most meats. The "rump" side of the average prosciutto is still a bit larger than the travle distance of the slicer but this is easily overcome by trimming the sides of the meat to slightly narrow it.

I have been thrilled with how thin this slicer can can "shave" a piece of meat. I can actually read through some of the slices. I have used this slicer to cut Roast beef, salami, turkey, chicken, tomatoes, onions, prosciutto, and even limes! It has never failed to perform as I had hoped. This is truly a "deli" quality slicer even if it is a bit small. Don't get me wrong, it is still a rather large machine and needs a bit of counter and storage space to operate. I actually am happy that it will fit in my cabinet, because my wife wasen't thrilled with the idea of this thing being on the countertop all of the time!

Having this machine has saved me both time and money when entertaining friends. (We throw parties a few times a year and it has made quite an impression on our guests!)

I have not tried the included blade sharpener yet but the instruction are clear and quite simple. I'll post again once I have tried the sharpener.

Thanks, Amazon for a great product and a gracious return policy!

Well it is now the Friday before Super Bowl 42 (4 years later, Feb. 2008) and I said I would let you know how the 662 blade sharpener has performed. Sorry to tell you that I can't do so because I have not had to sharpen the blade yet!!This machine still cuts like new!I have used this slicer on MANY occasions and am still pleased with its overall performance. I will use it again this weekend.

As others have noted clean-up takes a few minutes. The sliding carriage can be put in the dish washer if you like, but the rest is clean by hand!

As far as durability is concerned I have to replace the small plastic "slice-stopper" that keeps items from getting sucked into the blade. This is not dangerous but it can add to clean-up time.

I would still score this "home" slicer at 95/100. Enjoy.

Waring FS800 Pro Electric Food Slicer Review

Waring FS800 Pro Electric Food SlicerI just received my Amazon.com..., a Waring FS800 Pro Electric Food Slicer. Upon trying to use this item for the first time the motor barely had enough power to cut a tomato and emitted a burning smell as soon as I turned it on... Chef's Choice 630 International Gourmet Electric Food Slicer Review

Chef's Choice 630 International Gourmet Electric Food SlicerI used to work in a deli and have used my fair share of commercial slicers. When I decided to buy one for home use, I knew that I didn't want one of the large, cumbersome slicers that I had used in the past, and that this would mean some tradeoffs in terms of power and quality. After taking a long look around, I finally decided on the CC-630, and I'm glad I did.I believe this unit offers an excellent compromise between commercial power and everyday practicality.

Please don't misunderstand... you don't want this slicer if you're looking to open a deli or restaurant. You can feel the slicer slow down as it cuts through denser foods (like meat and cheese) that the commercial slicers would just pass right through.

This little unit is best suited to the home user who wants to be able to cut enough cold cuts for a day's use - say packing lunches for the family. It's also great for slicing up roasts, BONELESS turkey/chicken, cheeses, and vegetables.Whatever you slice, slice only what you will consume immediately - or at least in the next day or so.That's the secret to those deli sandwiches... cut everything fresh for the best flavor.

Of surprise to me was how well this unit handles bread. It needs to be a fairly flexible bread (no cornbread/biscuits) as it has to bend slightly to accomodate the shape of the slicer. If you make your own bread, you can now slice it perfectly at nearly any thickness.

Just be sure to let anything that you make yourself cool completely before slicing.A warm roast or turkey breast just isn't rigid enough to hold itself together against the moving blade. If you're looking to use this for your thanksgiving dinner then you'd be better off investing in a good sharp carving set (not the serrated kind, but the kind you can resharpen). For thanksgiving leftovers, the slicer is ideal.Just don't do anything silly like trying to cut through bones as they can get caught in the moving blade... a serious safety hazard.

Why only 4 stars?Well, this unit would rate 5 in my opinion if not for two issues.First, a safety concern: the unit has seperate on/off and thickness controls. So what?Well, that means that you can turn the unit off and still leave the blade in an exposed cutting position (and at thinner settings, this is almost imperceptable visually). This can lead to serious injury should someone try to clean the unit thinking that the blade is safely shielded. Not a good idea if you have children around, or even if you don't.A simple solution is just to get in the habit of turning the thickness to zero immediately before or after turning the slicer off.

My other issue is that the manual says that no part of the slicer is dishwasher safe. This is extremely annoying as there are several removable non-electronic parts that are difficult to clean by hand.It seems absurd that the heavy duty plastic and stainless steel that these parts are made of would not hold up to a household dishwasher.

Overall, I find this to be an excellent slicer and highly recommend for home use.Much better than the cheaper underpowered models that are nearly impossible to clean properly.

Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer Review

Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food SlicerThis thing is great!I've tried several mandolines--from the top-of-the-line unit to an inexpensive, but highly rated V-slicer, and another handheld.I sent the former back, gave the V-slicer away and the handheld broke.None of them served my purpose. All the blade changing and/or adjusting with the stationary mandolines was awkward and a lot of trouble considering I wasn't cooking for a restaurant--I just wanted to make salads for one or two, or a variety of other things, but usually in rather small quantities. This slicer is perfect. Now I can slice a leek, a carrot and part of a cucumber directly onto my salad in seconds.I can slice beets or other veggies very quickly and conveniently directly into the pot.The large knob on the bottom of this unit turns easily to create the desired slice thickness and a quick swish and rinse leaves it clean for the next time.I get high-end mandoline quality slices from the super sharp blade, but without all the set up and clean up time. This unit is sturdy and reliable.I couldn't be happier with my purchase.Between this and my Alligator dicer, my fruit and vegetable ingredients look professionally prepared and are done in a flash.

Update 9/5/09
This useful tool has been great for helping process summer bounty, most especially with getting the kernels off corncobs so they can be frozen.I've tried other products for that, but they are not satisfactory, where this tool allows me to run the cob down against the blade and in a few passes, all the kernels are in the bowl.I can do several ears in only a few minutes.I use one of those 'Kevlar' gloves to make sure I don't cut myself and it works great. Presto 02970 Professional SaladShooter Electric Slicer/Shredder, White Review

Presto 02970 Professional SaladShooter Electric Slicer/Shredder, WhiteFOLLOW UP: 1-15-2010

After 2 years of use (about 4 times a month), the plastic gear shaft that plugs into the main mechanism was never properly snug. So, it stripped out and as well, the area where the shaft is inserted into is also stripped, i.e., both the base mechanism and grater holder are stripped.

Maybe the plastic used is too soft?

So, anyway, can't use it at all and there is no way to repair it. Definitely not as solidly made as the ones 2 plus decades ago. Big waste of money. Bought many new graters and no way to use them unless I buy a completely new machine. Do not want to waste my money on a new one. Will buy a food processor instead.

=========================================

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Needs a Second Size Grater

Good old Salad Shooter. Got a cordless one back in the mid-80s and loved it, but they stopped making the battery piece for it and mine died. Should have bought the one with the cord, so I could still use it.

With the Professional version, the blades and feeding shoot are bigger and wider than the basic Salad Shooter, but sadly, there is only one grating blade and it grates in thick results. So, you have to go to [...] to order variable grater sizes.

No fine grating here. That's good for carrots (FYI, celery does NOT grate well in this -- it clogs horribly, use a different blade), but if you want your parmesan delicate, you will need to then put it in a food processor to pulverize it to powder. No in-between solution for thin, grated cheese.

Kind of defeats my main purpose of the shooter. Would have preferred to see 2 types of grating blades in the package.

Easy clean up (except be warned, when you grate cheese a good dollop is left behind the twist-on ring and in the bottom of the shoot). A little clumsy getting the unit to snap together. The old basic Shooter was easier to lock and load.

Otherwise, seems to be a strong tool (it's a bit loud) -- had it about 3 months; so far so good.

Chef's Choice 632 International Gourmet VariTilt Electric Food Slicer Review

Chef's Choice 632 International Gourmet VariTilt Electric Food SlicerPositive:Great! Great! Great!I spent weeks going over reviews and comments about electric food slicers in preparation for replacing one that I had been using for about 25 years. It was heavy, clunky and would slide around the counter when used.I only took it out to use when nothing else would work. But it did slice. After reading all that I could in the reviews, I decided that the Model 632 seemed the best fit for my use.Cooking is a hobby and not a profession so I needed nothing more than a good quality, home slicer.I decided to keep the new slicer on the counter for a while so I could try it out.I think it has found a permanent home.I find that I am using it almost every day for bread, meat, cheese and vegetables. The operation is smooth and with the caliper dial, very repeatable. It is stable and does not "walk" on the counter when slicing. It appears to be well manufactured and durable.Several reviewers pointed to the on/off and lock switches locations as being a problem.I find just the opposite to be true.Their location is both logical and easy to use.Though I don't use it often, I found that the little extra that I paid for the tilt table was worth the cost.Overall, it has met and/or exceeded every expectation that I had prior to purchase.

Negative:If there is a downside, it would be that the component parts are not dishwasher safe. This is nothing more that a very minor annoyance, since the unit comes apart very easily and requires little or no effort to clean.(Just use caution when cleaning the blade.)

Overall: I may find problems in the future, but for the present it gets 5 stars plus.In my opinion, a good buy.

Chef's Choice 667 International Professional Electric Food Slicer with 10-Inch Diameter Blade Review

Chef's Choice 667 International Professional Electric Food Slicer with 10 inch Diameter BladeThe Chef's Choice 667 slicer performs as advertised with its sturdy construction, powerful motor, large 10" belt-driven blade, and smooth quiet operation. This slicer does indeed produce deli-thin slices!
Out of the Box
The Chef's Choice 667 slicer comes out of the box with a 10" stainless-steel blade, blade sharpener, owner's manual, Allen wrench, small plastic serving tray, and temporary blade guard used for handling the sharp blade.
The plastic blade guard easily screws onto the blade using two large plastic knobs. This temporary guard covers the razor sharp edge of the blade and makes it easy to handle when it's removed from the slicer or during cleaning.
The plastic food tray is used to catch the food as it's being sliced, but it's too small and does not fit squarely under the blade.
The Allen wrench is used for removing the main blade guard during cleaning.
The blade sharpener is attached to the top of the unit and is held in place by a thumb screw. Simply loosen the screw, lift, and pivot the sharpener into place. A rear-mounted grinding wheel sharpens the blade while a front spring-loaded push-in grinding wheel removes any burrs.
The included non-serrated blade is excellent for slicing meats, vegetables, cheeses, etc., but is not well suited for breads. To slice bread you'll want to buy the optional serrated blade (~$90).
First Impressions
Operating the slicer is straightforward. Plug in the unit, load the carriage with the food to be sliced, flip the on/off switch to "on", and finally press the safety interlock switch. The interlock switch prevents the unit from starting up should the on/off switch be left on while plugging it in, a nice safety feature!
Once powered on, you must exert some pressure on the food pusher and slide the carriage forward and back while setting the thickness knob to your desired setting.
The slicer itself is very sturdy and appears to be well made. The main body is made of die-cast metal and the blade stainless steel. The carriage is smooth and rides on a single ball bearing. The motor/blade is powerful and is belt driven.
Some parts of the slicer utilize plastic screws, namely the friction adjustments for the sliding carriage and the thickness dial. There is also a small plastic piece which keeps the food pusher from scraping the carriage. This plastic piece fell out of its hole while I was operating the unit. I used SuperGlue to reattach.
The carriage is secured to the sliding arm with two bolts and small thumb nuts. These small nuts are awkward to remove and/or tighten and require the use of pliers. The bolt holes are slightly oversized and require lock washers, which I do not like. I would have preferred larger nuts (or knobs) and properly sized bolt holes to facilitate easy removal and reinstallation of the carriage tray.
The travel on the food pusher is somewhat limited and you may have to cut large roasts in half so they'll fit in the carriage. The bushings on the food pusher arm rod are made of plastic, I would have preferred brass or some other material.
Slice thickness is controlled by a large knob calibrated in millimeters. Maximum thickness is 0.6 inches. Once set, I didn't have to make any further adjustments. Friction is set by a plastic screw inside the base of the unit.
The bottom of the slicer is covered with a black plastic cover which seems a little flimsy for a "commercial quality" slicer. Four screws and four rubber feet secure the bottom cover to the unit.
The unit is moderately heavy, roughly 30 pounds, and it stays put on the counter.
First Experience
My first experience with this slicer was making thin sliced (almost shaved) roast beef sandwiches. I slow roasted a 10 pound Sirloin tip roast until it was rare and juicy. The slicer effortlessly sliced the meat to perfection. The motor showed no signs of stress and the carriage moved smoothly and easily.
This is my second food slicer. My first was an inexpensive Rival slicer which could not handle roast beef. It was noisy, flimsy, and downright dangerous to use. The cuts were uneven, thicker at the top and thinner at the bottom. I was worried that getting paper thin slices from a consumer-grade slicer was not possible. The 667 proved me wrong. It surpassed all of my expectations and performed similarly to the big Hobarts that I've used in the past.
Caveats
I do have some major complaints about this otherwise excellent slicer.
There are several joints in the housing of this slicer which allow meat juices drip inside the body of the unit. One such joint is located right where the motor housing attaches to the main base. This joint is located right where the sliced food falls as it's being cut, a very poor design. There is another joint where the blade thickness arm protrudes through the base. Juices from my roast beef dripped into the base of the slicer through these joints and started dripping out near one of the rubber feet on the opposite end of the unit. Yuk! The only way to clean up this mess was to remove the screws, rubber feet, and plastic cover from the bottom of the slicer. One shouldn't have to disassemble an appliance to properly clean it!
Also, to remove and clean the blade, you must use the Allen wrench to remove a single screw in the center of the front blade guard (poor design). Next you attach the plastic blade guard. Finally, using a screwdriver, you must remove three Phillips-head screws which secure the blade to the spindle. Not only is this inconvenient, but the screw heads will eventually wear and/or strip after repeated cleanings. Note: The blade should be removed to thoroughly clean the slicer since it's difficult to clean behind the blade. Another poor design.
In Summary
Overall, I am very happy with the performance of this slicer. It's sturdy, powerful, quiet, and slices exceptionally well. However, clean-up is another story.
This slicer is definitely "consumer grade" (not "commercial grade" as advertised) and will make a fine addition to any gourmet kitchen. When slicing juicy foods, I'd recommend using lots of paper towels placed strategically to catch the liquids before they can get inside the unit.

Deni 14150 Electric Food Slicer Pro II Review

Deni 14150 Electric Food Slicer Pro IIThis product is TERRIBLE.I caution EVERYONE to stay as far away from this as they can.I bought it, used it to slice cheese and the motor literally stopped, even on the highest speed. It has a variable control speed dial and if you put it on the lowest setting it can go, it sounds like something is caught up in the blade and the engine is going to catch on fire--and that's without trying to cut anything.

I'm not kidding, this is a terrible product.I hope someone else doesn't make the mistake I did.Fortunately I was lucky in that the seller decided to give me my money back (I still had to pay for shipping to and from the seller which came to $30).At the time, I couldn't find any reviews for this product and I thought they couldn't possibly screw something like that up...at least for what I wanted to use it for.

If you /do/ buy this thing, you'll be sorry...mark my words.

Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Plus Mandoline V-1001, 6 Piece Set Review

Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Plus Mandoline V-1001, 6 Piece SetI purchased the V-Slicer over ten years ago and it has been a faithful companion in the kitchen. The speed with which it slices/dices onions makes it more than worth the price. You can make french fries or julienne fries, onion rings, scalloped potatoes, carrot or celery sticks...the list is endless! Cleanup is no more than a rinse under water. The safety holder ensures that you won't be suffering any mishaps. But for safety's sake, keep this appliance away from the kids. The blades are VERY SHARP and can deliver a nasty cut if you don't handle them carefully. For that reason, I never wash them in the sink where suds can hide them and risk injury. But these warnings aside, this is a wonderful and versatile tool.It is as useful as a mandoline at a fraction of the price. You will reach for it often and the V-Slicer will be one of your favorite and most used kitchen tools.

Waring Pro FS150 Food Slicer Review

Waring Pro FS150 Food SlicerThis thing slices well, then comes the impractical task of trying to clean it. The tray does not detatch from the base, which cannot be put in water because it containes the motor. Pieces of food work their way into the motor area. After removing the blade (using tools) you must remove a plastic cover with 3 screws and dig out the pieces of food. I could not believe how bad a design it was from a cleaning standpoint. The tray that slides back and forth with the food has a stainless top that is literally two-faced taped onto the plastic base. This was very poor from a quality standpoint, and came off in my hand the first and only time used. The plastic base for this tray has about fifty little half inch square honey-comb sort of areas that grease from meat or juices from food WILL get down into. This thing is a nightmare to adequately clean and not worth the trouble. It went back to the store immediately, and it was not all the way clean because after about thirty minutes I gave up. I'm looking for another brand now.

Rival 1042W Electric Food Slicer, White Review

Rival 1042W Electric Food Slicer, WhiteI have thoroughly enjoyed having this slicer.I make bread and other methods of slicing have not been completely satisfactory.I want thinner slices to reduce calories and make the loaves last longer. This slicer does the trick. You can't just run the slicer easily back and forth with bread, you have to manually return the bread to the starting position, but that's no big deal.Sometimes the bottom crust catches between the blade and the housing and you have to pull it out gently without breaking the bread - but that isn't a big problem either. This is just so much better than other things I have tried, and without spending hundreds of dollars (or more) on a professional slicer.Well worth the money, wouldn't want to be without it.

Progressive International Folding Mandoline Slicer Review

Progressive International Folding Mandoline SlicerHeard about this mandoline from a guy who makes salad frequently. This is ideal.Exceptionally easy to clean, quick to handwash, or pop it in the dishwasher.Offers a good variety of slice thicknesses, plus juliennes; changeout is quick and easy.Storage box is a definite plus.Excellent value for the price. The best part? The blade is really sharp. The worst part?Yeah, the blade is really, really sharp.I find the holder is too awkward to use and actually sliced myself once in the first week because it went so much faster than I expected.Best way to get a stir fry or fajitas done and on the table in top speed, though.

Chef's Choice 610 Premium Electric Food Slicer Review

Chef's Choice 610 Premium Electric Food SlicerBought the Chefs Choice 610 food slicer, then saw the Waring FS150 (similar but a Professional model with larger motor) for $30 less an hour later.Bought that one also with intent to look up reviews online and decide at home. After reading reviews (great reviews for Chefs Choice, awful reviews for the Waring) and instruction manuals on both (still can't believe you can't run the Waring for more than 10 minutes at a time and the poor design for cleanup) decided to keep the Chefs Choice.Used it to slice roast beef, swiss cheese and baked turkey breast.Worked extremely well on all and the unit is extremely easy to use.Cleanup took about 5 minutes total.Unit is a little larger than I would have liked, but all the food slicers have similar dimensions. Well worth the extra $30.
