Unfortunately, I've ordered more than my share of FoodSaver products, having bought into the philosophy of vacuum storage,despite reading ample warnings from discontented consumers.

What many of them claim is very much to the point: plastic containers frequently develop cracks and loss of vacuum.I've had many of their marinators and storage canisters prove defective after less than 10 uses.It seems to be related to the material properties and container size characteristics.The smaller containers seem to last longer. Those with thick walls relative to the specified volume or reinforcing structures seem to last just a bit longer.

In plain language, the plastic containers are unreliable.FoodSaver should develop materials and designs that can handle the stress of the vacuum cycling placed on them, or quit the the business.Since their products have been on the market for many years, I can only assume they are more interested in recruiting new customers than satisfying existing customers. If you like filling out warranty forms every few weeks, more power to you.

Bottle sealers are equally worthless.Every one that I bought lost vacuum in short order.In one case, a defective seal resulted in a spill of cooking oil that damaged a nylon tent and other camping gear.

FoodSaver has done a good job with certain items in their product line.The vacuum unit is well designed and performs reliably, as long as the instuctions are followed.The bagging system is unassailable, even though the cost of the bags and rolls is quite high (read Consumer Reports reviews).And, to be fair, their Universal lids are excellent.Use them to sealsmall glass jars or stainless steel bowls, and there is no loss of vacuum due to cracked plastic.

Bottom line?Be careful which products you buy.Some are excellent, while others are pure junk.

Bakertowne Thick & Thin Cheese Slicer Review

I LOVE this item. It makes perfect, uniform cheese slices - something I have never been able to accomplish with a knife, cheese plane, or wire cutter attached to a board. I bought one at my local Kitchen Outlet over a decade ago and fell in love. The only downside is that it's a little flimsy with a life expectancy of about one year. It's so inexpensive that I didn't mind buying a new one once a year. But then my local kitchen outlet stopped carrying it.

I bought a similar item from a different manufacturer that cost about twice as much and it broke while I was cutting my first slice of cheese! Don't settle for anything less than the original Thick & Thin Cheese Slicer! It's the best :)

Norpro Adjustable Cheese Slicer Review

Our last Norpro wire cheese slicer lasted 12 years!

The quality and durability of the Norpro line of cheese slicers gives me no reason to consider another brand.

This particular model is heavier than it appears (more so than our last one), which makes slicing firm cheeses a cinch. The handle is well balanced so you need only set the slicer on the cheese and push down gently. Your cheese cuts evenly and easily.

Cleanup is easy, too. We handwash the slicer, using an old toothbrush to clean around the adjustable screws.

In summary, this is a great value for the price and durability. We often buy firm cheeses in 2-pound blocks, which saves us a lot of money over sliced, deli cheese.

NOVEMBER 2009 UPDATE

The cutting wire finally broke, so we switched to the spare wire (included) today. That means this model lasted just one year. We wondered what was different than our past experience and, finally, concluded that our new kitchen helpers -- our sons, ages 5 and 7 -- may have something to do with it. Anyway, I'll post another update when this wire breaks. Hopefully, we'll get another year and more out of the replacement wire.

I have used both the bags and the rolls with my food saver and much prefer the rolls.It may take you an additional 5 seconds to make it into a bag but the rolls are really more cost effective and convenient.With the rolls you truly only use what you will need.If you've sealed something that will only be opened once you make it exactly that size, if you're going to be opening it multiple times just remember to allow for that in your original sizing.If you go through the trouble of washing and reusing the bags for incrementally smaller things such as from cold cuts down to cheese you will find that these rolls while initially a larger expense than you may like will more than pay for themselves in the end.The 11" rolls are also very useful.

Apple Peeler/Corer/Slicer Review

We found the Apple Peeler on sale at a home store and bought it on an impulse. My expectations were fairly low and I am happy to say that it performed way better than it looked like it was going to. The only real issue is with the very poor instructions, so some trial and error testing was needed.

The keys to getting good results are:

1) Use symmetrical Apples or Potatoes
2) The firmer the better
3) Take time align the Apple so the core can be cleanly removed

Setting the contraption up is very easy. The base firmly attaches to most flat surfaces via a suction cup, which is nice because it can be positioned over our sink to catch the peels.

We love how quickly this peels and cores a lot of apples! Our kids also got a kick out of using it, so that was a big plus as well.

Nesco FG-400PR Professional 380-Watt Cast-Aluminum Food Grinder Review

My first impression on getting this unit was that it was a good quality machine.A nice step up from the stand mixer attachment.I started noticing a couple of short falls when I used it for the first time.The food pusher can be a bit tricky to keep from pulling the lid off if the meat gets a bit sticky in the grinder.

The smallest sausage stuffer tube is too large for breakfast links or other small sausages.I also found out (after quite a bit of difficulty in contacting the manufacturer) that this is not a standard size grinder.It is very close to a standard #8 grinder, but not quite, so you can't purchase additional sausage stuffing tubes, grinder plates, or replacement blades when the originals wear down.

Bottom line is that the unit seems solid and adequate for a basic grinder if you don't expect to use it much, or have a need/desire to purchase additional attachments.If you plan to do much grinding or sausage making, however, I would go for one of the grinders that is a standard size, so you have ready access to additional attachments and replacement blades and knives.

MIU Composite Mandoline Food Slicer Review

The quality of this mandoline surprised me. For the price it is really excellent and definitely semi-professional quality. The only negative I can find is that the food pusher is too slippery. The holder should be made with rubberized sides rather than the smooth metal-like plastic, so being careful not to drop it is paramount. I have no reservations recommending this food processor, and the company replaces parts at very low cost, unusual for any company.

Benriner Cook Help Spiral Vegatable Slicer Review

I wish I could reverse my rating of this device from one star to 5 but I am not able to- please keep in mind that I no longer want to rate this 1 star when you read this review.

At first, I bought this product and got nothing but frustration from it.Usually my entire family can figure out new methods and ways to use things, even if hardly anyone else can figure it out.

I had given up.

I had gotten nothing but frustration with the Benriner Cook Help, so I wrote a review of it expressing it as such.

After writing the review, I approached the Benriner as someone who never saw it before and I started experimenting.

My problems had been due to miscommunication on how to use this unit.There is not a whole lot out there about the Benriner Cook Help, so I was depending on the few directions out there, and none of them worked.

Here is what I figured out:

Although it is often told that you can make angel hair noodles from zucchini, I was always told that you have to use the smallest blades to do this.That is not true.

The key to using this device is that the softer the vegetable, the larger the blade attachment that you need to use.

The result is to have very long spaghetti style noodles just like you would cook, but they are raw.Then you made raw tomato sauce by processing tomatoes, herbs, and veggies and use it over top.

I have not been able to get carrots to work with this yet, but I have been working most intently with zucchini because that was my biggest goal in using this device.

However, I have found that if you apply pretty solid heavy pressure on the unit with one hand and the handle while you crank it with the other, I can get most of the zucchini to spiral out in perfect noodles.My family loves it and I could not be more thrilled.

At first, I was using the smallest blades for things- but they would not work, and I got frustrated.

If you have hard seeds in the vegetables, you will also find that they will clog up the blade area in any size and make it so you can not spiralize as well.

If you work with it and learn what size works for what- you can get a lot of excellent performance from the Benriner Cook Help.

Lastly, take the blades out BEFORE you wash it, and it will clean up very easily.

I regret that I can not reverse my previous rating, but at least I got another chance to do a follow up review to let you know the update about what I have discovered!

What a work and time saver in the kitchen! I've never tried to calculate the number of hours I've spent in front of a cutting board, knife in hand, slicing tomatoes, shredding carrots, chopping lettuce. Nor do I care to be reminded of how often I've not made a dish we love simply because of the time involved in slicing or shredding.

This shredder/slicer from Hamilton Beach is an amazing small appliance that prepares lettuce for tacos before I can turn around, and shreds carrots for our favorite carrot-raisin salad before I can take the raisins out of the box! Not only does it shred or slice whatever I need in a minute's time, but the result is so much more attractive than I could ever do by hand.

To make the task even easier, the Change-A-Bowl comes with - you guessed it, extra bowls so that there's no need to stop and wash the permanent bowl if you're preparing several different ingredients. Three GladWare bowls are included in the box.

I bought this along with several other kitchen gadgets using Amazons 4-for-3 promotion.It's been something I've wanted, but didn't necessarily need. Now that we have it though, I'm very glad I bought it.

It makes slicing apples easy and quick. Normally when I make apple pie I peel, cut and core by hand, but with this it cut out one step all together and saved quite a bit of time.Plus the apples were even so they cooked better.

Clean up is easy too, just rinse under some hot water or put on the top rack of your dishwasher.

Pinzon Stainless-Steel Mandoline [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] Review

I bought this as a gold box item, thankfully, because otherwise I would have returned it.All I use it for is to slice onions thinly.I've used the straight blade less than 10 times and it is already dull.I read the reviews for the previous Pinzon mandoline which were universally terrible but I also read that Amazon had taken that model off the market and replaced it with this one which was supposed to be much better but my complaint is the same as the other model.Also the slices get stuck in the machine.I had better luck with my plastic V-slicer.I gave the mandoline 2 stars because it does have a lot of attachments and is easy to use but it is difficult to clean and doesn't serve its main purpose, to slice!

Update 2/29/08: I now absolutely hate this product.The straight blade has completely dulled.The food slices get caught under the mandoline by the blades that are turned to dice the food rather than slip out to the bowl or plate underneath.Make sure you use the food holder to slice because the blade is so dull, the food slips and you will get cut.This mandoline is going in the trash.I won't even donate it because I'm afraid someone will get hurt.

Black & Decker FP1450 Quick'n Easy 450-Watt 8-Cup Food Processor Review

I purchased this food processor for myself only about two weeks ago, so I can't say yet as to how long it lasts.I wanted to point out a few problems with it though.First off I really despise the locking lid 'safety feature'!I find it difficult to position the bowl and lid correctly and get it to lock and I usually have to try this several times to get it right.(The unit will not power on until the lid is locked correctly)In fact, the first day that I had this I thought that it was broken and I almost returned it!I am also not pleased with the shredding blade.My main purpose of this processor was to shred potatoes so that I don't have to use a hand grater or purchase the frozen pre-shredded ones.The shredding blade on this is very small and makes the potatoes come out more like spaghetti noodles.I would love to purchase a different size blade but Black and Decker does not make one.I am going to shop other food processors with better shredding capabilities and when I find one that suits me I am going to replace this one.I hope that this review will help others who are looking for a good shredding food processor.

MIU France Professional Mandoline Slicer, Stainless Steel Review

This does a great job.Feels a bit awkward at first but you soon get used to it.I'm an amateur and this is a professional piece of equipment.It would have been nice if it had come with some instructions on how to adjust the settings.I was able to figure out most settings by experimenting.Can't figure out how to waffle, but then maybe it doesn't.Many don't.It comes in a very handy, easy to open and close, carry case that allows me to fit it under the sink.So many of us have crowded cabinet space these days that that is a real plus!
